One of the main goals of the ITC Mauritius Survey is to evaluate the effectiveness of new Public Health (Restrictionson Tbacco Products) Regulations. These Regulations were passed on November 28, 2008 and were implemented in two phases.

Literacy: 84.4% (Male 88.4%, Female 80.5% (2000 census)

Smoking Prevalence and Related Costs:

  • 32.4% of men and 2.6% of women (18+ years) were current smokers (2009 ITC )

Smoking Policies:
Effective March 2009:

  • Ban on smoking in public indoor and outdoor areas
  • Ban on sale of tobacco to minors and by minors
  • Ban on advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products
