Professor Melanie Wakefield is Director of the Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer at the Cancer Council Victoria and an NHMRC Principal Research Fellow.
With qualifications in psychology and public health, she has over 20 years of experience in evaluating tobacco control policies and programs, with particular interests in understanding the influence of anti-smoking advertising and news coverage of tobacco issues on smoking behaviour.
Before her current role, Professor Wakefield worked in research positions in Chicago, Adelaide and Nottingham.
She is Deputy Editor of the journal Tobacco Control and holds a range of research grants from Australian and US funding sources to study effects of the media on smoking behaviour.
