See flyer for Conference details
The InterAmerican Heart Foundation (IAHF) and the Comisión Nacional Permanente de Lucha Antitabáquica (COLAT) are pleased to announce the 3rd Latin American and Caribbean Conference on Tobacco OR Health and the 1st Peruvian Conference on Tobacco OR Health. Due to the success of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the tobacco control movement, many countries have enacted tobacco control legislation to protect individuals from the health risks of tobacco related diseases. However, tobacco control policies are increasingly threatened by the actions of the tobacco industry.
Despite the current economic hardship, we know we have to continue and even intensify our collaborative efforts to contain tobacco’s dramatic health and economic damage. This year’s Conference will bring together tobacco control scientists, treatment specialists and policy advocates from the region and beyond, to share and apply the latest evidence to strengthen treatment protocols, research approaches, and encourage continued positive policy change and implementation of tobacco control measures throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
The opening keynote speaker will be Dr. Elmer Huerta (Peru), Principal Investigator of the Latin American Cancer Research Coalition (LACRC) and a member of its Steering Committee. Dr. Huerta is currently the founder and director of the Cancer Risk Assessment and Screening Center at the Washington Cancer Institute at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. In addition to his clinical duties in cancer prevention and screening, he continues his research and educational work with the Hispanic community.
Highlights of the conference include symposia on advocacy, treatment practice and research, policy implementation, illicit trade, advertising and promotion, and smokefree environments. This meeting is open to all those interested in and committed to tobacco control.
